He was awarded a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he performed cutting-edge research to help discover a vaccine for HIV disease.  This work was published in multiple peer-reviewed journals, including one of the most prestigious scientific journals in the world, Nature Medicine.  He also served as a sailing instructor at the NIH Sailing Club and was a competitive sailor during his years in medical school. He played soccer in the Washington International Soccer League in his spare time.

He attended medical school at Howard University College of Medicine after being awarded the Howard University Trustee Scholarship. He was the recipient of the Academic Achievement Award for his academic accomplishments in preclinical training. During his clinical training, he received the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health Award.  He was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society, while he was a medical student.  This honor is given to students of the highest academic standing who have demonstrated leadership among their peers, professionalism and sound ethics, a promise of future success in medicine and a commitment to service in the school and community.  During medical school, he was appointed as a Program Manager at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, which helps to define and establish the standards of care in medical practice.  While there, he helped develop a statistical model to analyze AHRQ research. The goal was to measure the impact of the agency’s work on medical education and practice.  This standard has been widely adopted throughout the scientific community. He also served as a curriculum advisor for the College of Medicine, where he helped transition the College to an integrated curriculum.  In his spare time, he assisted his classmates as a MedStar tutor.

Following his General Surgery residency, he began his fellowship in Plastic Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia. During his tenure there, he continued his research with stem cells. He utilized a custom-made oscillating bioreactor to create bone from stem cells found in blood, with the aim of healing injured tissue. He presented this work at the Plastic Surgery Research Council annual meeting. He also co-authored a paper on the use of fat transfer techniques to rejuvenate the face. There is now widespread use of these techniques for permanent aesthetic rejuvenation of the face. Dr. Ross has also employed these fat transfer techniques for improving the appearance of the breasts, buttocks and extremities. These techniques may also be used to restore any part of the body’s soft tissue damaged by radiation, aging or injury. During those years, he honed his technical skills and learned to perform the full complement of plastic surgical procedures. These experiences cultivated his specific interest in aesthetic surgery.

Following the completion of his plastic surgery training, he and his family moved to Charleston, West Virginia. He began work at the Charleston Area Medical Center where he held an appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the West Virginia University School of Medicine. He was appointed to several leadership roles during his tenure there, including the Breast Program Leadership Committee, the Women & Children’s Hospital Operating Room Committee, Clinical Initiatives Committee and others.  He was featured in the local news while there. He performed a life-saving operation at a remote factory where a worker was trapped in a piece of machinery.  After being flown to the site by helicopter, he and his team worked to save the unfortunate woman. He was selected for the Heart & Soul Award in recognition of his exemplary performance.

Whether it is a botox injection, facelift or a complex breast revision, I want my patients to be happy that they chose me to be their doctor.”
